Management and operating procedure of cookies

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files sent from the site to the browser of the interested party, where they are stored before being re-transmitted back to the site when you visit it again. By using cookies, user preferences can be registered, such as browsing history, downloads and other activities. By disabling cookies, some of our services may not work properly and users may not be able to access many features designed to enhance their experience on the site. For more information on managing or disabling browser cookies, please see the last section of this document.

Lifespan of cookies

The duration of cookies in the user’s browser is determined at the time of its creation; based on their lifespan, cookies can be divided into:

  • temporary or session cookies: they store temporary information, link users’ online activities during a specific session. They are removed from the computer once you close the browser;
  • persistent: they store information for longer than a single session; they have a variable expiration date depending on their purpose. Persistent cookies stay in your device also after you have quit your browser.

Nature of cookies

Cookies can be distinguished

by origin:

  • first-party cookies: these cookies normally belong to the same domain as the site one is visiting. They are called first-party cookies. They can be both temporary and persistent;
  • third-party cookies: they are set by other domains than the one you are currently on. They are mostly used when web pages feature content from external sites, such as banner ads. This means advertisers have access to users’ browsing history, in order to deliver useful and engaging ads. Privacy settings of the most recent browsers can block third-party cookies.

or by purpose:

  • technical cookies: they are used to browse and to access a site easily. Technical cookies are essential to make the website’s contents function properly or to remember the user data without having to retype it again every session (navigation cookies), to keep track of language preferences or settings. (functionality cookies);
  • analytical cookies: they help determine potential optimization of a site; the site’s owner can collect aggregate information about the number of users and how they visit the site. In terms of information and consent, the same rules of technical cookies apply to analytical cookies;
  • profiling cookies: these cookies are intended to offer, for example, targeted advertisements, as well as to display the most interesting content based on visitors’ activity and interests during their navigation. Furthermore, profiling cookies prevent users from being offered services that they may have refused in the past;
  • social media cookies: these cookies enable users to share website contents with other users. Social media cookies are typically used to activate the "Like" or "Follow" features of Social media such as Facebook and Twitter, just to name a few. Social media may identify their users and collect information whilst they browse other sites.
